Chapter 8

I CLACKED MY FINGERNAILS against the aged wood of my coffee table, the surface scattered with open grimoires and half melted candles. Brad and Evie slumped beside each other on my couch, their faces drawn in concentration. We were a trio united by a purpose.

I was staring into a crystal ball that hummed with latent energy. “We’ve got to be cunning. Make the creature think it’s winning until the very last second.”

Brad nodded, his blue eyes sharp beneath furrowed brows. “And timing is crucial. We can’t let it near the High Witch’s celebration. That’d be...well, catastrophic.”

It certainly would be. Not just for my future job prospects, but for our whole town.

Evie’s hazel stare flicked from me to Brad. She leaned forward, her elbows on her knees. “That’s the understatement of the century. Let’s weave an illusion over the trap to disguise it, and we need something irresistible to lure that shadowy fiend.”

A tingling of anticipation spiraled in my stomach. Something that creature couldn’t resist? That would be me. “Yeah, and everything will need to be perfect. No room for error on this one.” My voice was steady, but inside, my pulse sped up and doubt crept in. Did we really have a chance against such dark, ancient magic? I liked to think so, but were we deluding ourselves here?

“Evie,” said Brad, turning to her with a set to his jaw, “you’re on diversions. Sage, you and your spell craft are the linchpin. And I’ll—” He paused, his gaze meeting mine. “I’ll take care of the containment since that is my specialty magic.”

“Got it.” I nodded and went back to my task.

Hours later, the smell of ancient parchment filled the air as Evie and I hunched over even more dusty tomes, our fingers tracing lines of forgotten languages. These books hadn’t been opened in years, but I was grateful we had access to them now.

“Here,” said Evie, pointing to a passage in front of her and moving the book closer so I could see. “This incantation is unbreakable—if combined with dragon’s bane and phoenix feather.”

“Rare ingredients for a rare spell,” I said, feeling the rush of seventh-level magic surge at the prospect. “But we don’t have to time to locate those items.” And I wouldn’t even know who to ask.

Brad stood in the corner of my living room, where runes glowed beneath his hands on a set of chains. “I’m reinforcing these with elemental wards. Earth, fire, air, water—Tenebris won’t be able to break free once he’s stuck... at least I hope not.”

I glanced over, my gaze roaming over Brad’s strong arms and body as I watched his masterful work. The intricacy of the elemental wards was a testament to his skill and dedication, a reminder of the incredible talents possessed by those I called my friends. But even as I marveled at his handiwork, worry roiled in the pit of my stomach.

Our plan was bold, daring even, but it was also fraught with danger. Tenebris was no ordinary foe. No mere creature of darkness to be easily vanquished.
